This publication contains monthly information on sales of new motor vehicles in each State/Territory in original, seasonally adjusted and trend estimated terms. The original data are sourced from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries. Sales data are available for passenger vehicles, other vehicles and total vehicles at the State/Territory and National levels.


JANUARY 2002 KEY POINTS

Trend

The trend for total new vehicle sales has been rising for the last eight months although the rate of growth slowed in January to 1.9% over the previous month. Passenger vehicle sales have been rising for the last six months with the growth rate remaining steady since November 2001. Sales of Other vehicles have continued rising for the last nine months. However, the rate of growth fell from 2.1% in December to 1.6% in January. The trend level for total vehicle sales has risen in all States and Territories for at least the last six months.

Seasonally Adjusted

Seasonally adjusted sales of new vehicles rose by 9.9% in January with passenger vehicles up by 5.0% and other vehicles by 21.1%. Sales for January 2002 were 14.6% higher than the previous year. Sales rose in January 2002 for all States and Territories with the exception of Western Australia. The fall in WA in January followed a larger than normal increase in December 2001.
